Will the Y101 Rock-Off be fixed this year?

The 2006 rock-off was a joke. With a little inside scoop, it very well looked like it was fixed.
I thought the results of the winner was based off the fans. Apparently this was not the case in 2006. I can’t vouch for last years, but I lost a lot of respect for this event.
One of the performers who won that year was very, very close with someone who was employed by Y101, Cox Radio. This gave a lot of pull for this certain band. Besides this, they based the winner off of how close their music sounds to popular sounds of the radio. It wasn’t based on how good the band was or how the crowd reacted to their music. It was more based on if they sounded like some sheep band like Puddle of Mudd.
I haven’t heard of how they are judging the winners this year, but maybe they will think about the listeners this time. We need to let corporate know that we are not sheep. The fans come first, so give us what we want to hear locally.

I just want to comment on what you said about this contest being fixed. I will say that I went to 2 Rock offs this year so far, and the winners who won, I don’t think should have won. The first one I saw was with 3 acts; Azure Allele, Robert Parker Vaughn, and Colin Healy and the Jetskis. Ok, so Colin Healy and the Jetskis were up first. They sounded very cookie cutter/mainstream like a Bens Folds Five replica. However they were pleasant to listen too. There were about 3 little girls/kids who were dancing/cheering for them maybe even there parents. Now on to the second act Azure Allele; Odd name but they were much different than most other bands/sounds out here in the local scene. A heavy rock sound with a girl singer was very refreshing. Now they had about 30 or so people standing up/cheering for them. I guess they were more like a evanescence type of band, but with better music. Finally Robert Parker Vaughn. He is great if you are into folk type of John Mayer music. Where is the ROCK in that?? Don’t get me wrong, he was talented but I have no idea how he even made it into the rock off. He had maybe 6 people who was cheering for them and I think that those were still people left over from the previous bands fans. So, the rules state on Y101 Each Thursday night, band performances will be judged by a pre-selected panel of judges based on (1) crowd response, (2) musicianship, (3) stage presence, (4) appearance, (5) originality and (6) cohesion. In the event of a tie, a representative from the panel of judges will break the tie and determine the band that will move on to the semi-final. From there 2 bands will move on to the final. All decisions by the judges are final.
If that is the case, Azure Allele should have won on all accounts. The other bands barely had any stage presence or crowd response. The 3rd act even did a cover which is against the rules. Now why have rules if you are going to break them?? Personally, I think the winner is already determined. Its really sad when personal friends of the staff are the ones who win and make it into the finals. So yeah, In my opinion this year is totally fixed.

Great response to my article. I have yet to go to any of the events this year, which is quite sad.
Let’s hope the winner really does deserve it this year. :(
